Jamila Sinlao

Jamila Jamison Sinlao is a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara. Her dissertation project, “Sisterhood on the Frontier: Nineteenth Century Catholic Sisters in the San Francisco Bay Area,” explores the ways in which Catholic sisters functioned as co-architects of the Catholic Church in California, utilizing alternative discourses of feminine spirituality to assert their autonomy within the constraints of a patriarchal and, at times, sexist institution. She also examines the dynamics through which organizational culture is reproduced, remixed, and reconfigured over time.
